Competitors Guide

Interested in entering the MailASail AZAB 2019?  Here’s what you need to know…

The Basics

The AZAB is open to single or two-handed crews and is a race from Falmouth Harbour, in the UK, to the town of Ponta Delgada on the island of São Miguel, part of the Azores Islands in the mid-atlantic.  Depending on their crossing time, competitors generally have a few days to enjoy the town before racing back to Falmouth.

The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing, and boats will be rated using the IRC handicap.  There will be four monohull classes, split on handicap.

In the 2019 race, for the first time for many years, eligibility has been widened to include multihulls.

The race will start from Falmouth at 1200 BST on Saturday on 1 June 2019. Classes will start in the order at the times given in sailing instructions.

The return leg from Ponta Delgada will start at 1350 local time on Tuesday 18 June 2019.

Entry has been open since 1st April 2017. A late entry fee will be payable from the beginning of March.  The cut off date for late entries is 1st May 2019.

You must have completed your 300 mile qualifying passage before 1st May 2019.

a)  are seaworthy Monohull or Multihull boats with hull length between 8.23m and 18.5m inclusive

b)  are sailed either single-handed or two-handed

c) have a current IRC rating or MOCRA Certificate

d) comply with OSR Category 1 requirements

Boats must carry a satellite telephone communication system which allows two-way voice communication with the organising committee throughout the race.

All competitors must complete a non-stop qualifying passage, under sail alone, of not less than 300nm in the boat in which they will complete the race.  The passage must be done alone if single-handed, or with your crew if double-handed.
